40 Years of Stories: Find out how Ultradent works with the best and the brightest in this month’s stories!531842018-05-31T22:36:00ZAs we celebrate Ultradent’s 40th Anniversary throughout the coming year, we also celebrate the people that work here and the rich stories they have to tell about the company, how it’s grown, and the role they’ve played in its history. Find out how Ultradent has changed the lives of Dr. Fischer's own children.40-year-anniversary-juneShaLyse Walker

In celebration of Ultradent’s 40th anniversary this year, we’ve been sharing stories from Ultradent’s employees about meaningful moments, sentimental memories, exhilarating milestones, and turning points in their careers that have come as a result of their time at Ultradent. However, for this edition of “40 Years of Stories,” we thought we’d reach outside of the company and chat with three well-known clinicians about their experiences with Ultradent, its products, and its founder and CEO, Dr. Dan Fischer, throughout the years.

Dr. John Flucke

When did you first hear about Ultradent?
I heard about Ultradent early in my career. The first thing I heard about was about “this amazing hemostatic product” (Viscostat hemostatic) from peers. However, as I explored Ultradent, I discovered so much more! I call ViscoStat hemostatic an “everyday product and an everyday blessing.”

When did you first meet Dr. Fischer?
The first time I actually met Dr. Fischer was when I got a chance to interview him for video I was shooting for Dental Products Report. It turned out that we were “two peas in a pod.” In fact, it took forever to shoot the video because we kept getting off track by telling each other stories or discussing our passion for dentistry! Dr. Fischer is such a unique and incredible individual. I walked away from the interview thinking, “this man is the real deal.” I’m proud to say my impression was right!

What is your favorite Ultradent product, and why?
That’s like asking someone to choose their favorite child! I use tons of Ultradent products so it’s hard to narrow it down. Let’s say that at this point in time, I love Peak® Universal Bond adhesive, Mosaic® composite, Permaflo® flowable composite, and the Genius® Endodontic System. Mosaic® composite is my favorite composite out there. It took seven years of work to get it on the market and that’s what I love about Ultradent. They knew they were onto something, but they didn’t start to sell it until they were convinced it was the best it could be. That kind of commitment is what separates Ultradent from so many other companies.

How is Ultradent different?
As a company, Ultradent is the largest company I know that always does the right thing. It’s a combination of a great leader (Dr. Fischer), a great team, and great products. I’ve never been around a better group of people. I’ve always told folks that if you focus on doing the right thing, success will be quick to follow. I’ve always tried to live my life that way and I love dealing with a company that feels that way too. In dentistry, we ALL work for the patient. Everything we all do, every moment of our professional lives should be about the patient. Without patients, none of us have a career. Ultradent’s motto of “Improving Oral Health Globally” is putting that philosophy into words. I’m doing my best to help my patients and I love being supported by a company that has as big of a patient commitment as I do.

Dr. Jaimeé Morgan

When did you first hear about Ultradent?
I first found out about Ultradent in my senior year of dental school when Ultradent provided gift bags full of their products for us to try. I immediately fell in love with their UltraSeal XT® sealant. It was so much easier to use than anything I had ever used. In fact, when I graduated and started practicing as an associate, I purchased my own supply of UltraSeal XT® sealant because the senior dentist I worked with used something else that was more time consuming and was easily exposed to moisture before it had a chance to cure. I’m so glad I did!

When did you first meet Dr. Fischer?
I met Dr. Fischer at the Chicago Midwinter Meeting in 1997. He was demonstrating a product on his hand and I was immediately taken with it. After meeting him and seeing how down to earth and approachable he was, all I had to do was look around the booth and see the energy and enthusiasm of the Ultradent crew, and I knew that was something I wanted to be a part of. Shortly thereafter, I was invited to fly to Salt Lake City to meet the rest of the Ultradent family for their big company meeting with international team members and all! It was an amazing experience. I went back home to San Antonio, and about three days later I got a call asking me if I could join the family as a lecturer. I never thought I would leave Texas, but this opportunity was a life changing event, and has proven over these past twenty years to be the right decision. Not only did I have the Ultradent family to welcome me, I also had Dr. Fischer, his wife, Leenie, and the entire Fischer family take me in like I was one of their own. That was special.

What is your favorite Ultradent Product, and why?
Ultradent has so many fabulous products, it would be hard to pick just one as my favorite. I love Vit-l-escence® composite and Mosaic® composite, but without the support of UltraEtch® etchant, as well as Peak® Universal Bond adhesive and the Jiffy® polishing system, they wouldn't be the same. They all work together so well. I also think that Opalescence® teeth whitening is the best bleaching system on the planet!

How is Ultradent different?
I have always been impressed by the science behind every Ultradent product. They are designed to make our lives easier, without compromising on quality or integrity for the sake of convenience. Reliable and convenient don't always go together, but Ultradent has proven that they can go hand-in-hand.

What is your favorite memory of working with Ultradent throughout the years?
Having the opportunity to practice dentistry alongside Dr. Fischer has been a truly amazing experience. Seeing the light bulb go on in his head while he’s working on a patient because he just came up with a new product idea is really awesome. Being around to see those ideas turn into actual products that dentists use makes me want to pinch myself. I’m so lucky! Dr. Fischer has been a lifelong friend. He even spoke and danced at my wedding. I have to say, I’m a lucky girl.

Dr. Newton Fahl

When did you first hear about Ultradent?
I first heard about Ultradent's products when I was a graduate student doing my MS in Operative Dentistry at the University of Iowa from 1987–1989.

What was the first Ultradent Product you ever tried?
Opalescence® teeth whitening systems and Astringedent® hemostatic were the first Ultradent product I ever used.

When did you first meet Dr. Fischer?
I was introduced to Dr. Fischer by my good friend and professor, Dr. Gerald E. Denehy, at an AACD meeting in Miami in 1993. Being a young dentist who was just starting his career, I was in awe of Dr. Fischer's friendliness and how passionate he was about dentistry. He came across as a very simple, down-to-earth man in spite of all the knowledge and professional recognition he had. This simplicity and humble attitude are certainly a trademark that have accompanied him throughout the years I have known him.

What is your favorite Ultradent product, and why?
I have so many Ultradent products that I like! However, I became a fan of Vit-l-escence® composite from day one. It was a groundbreaking composite resin system that immensely contributed to the way I practiced and taught esthetic composite resin dentistry. Its layering concept was exceptional and the restorations turned out amazingly strong and life-like. I believe Mosaic® composite is standing on the shoulders of its predecessor and shows tremendous esthetic and functional potential due to its improved biomechanical and handling properties. Also, I of course love the VALO® curing light. It cures all composites, has varying energy output, and the ergonomics of its design are outstanding.

How is Ultradent different?
Ultradent stands out because it is a company founded and run by a dentist who endeavors to use state-of-the-art knowledge and innovative technology to serve other dentists with scientifically based, clinically relevant products.

Do you have a favorite memory of working with Ultradent throughout the years?
I have many! First, I remember I was teaching a course in Curitiba, Brazil, in 1993 and knew that Dr. Fisher was coming to Brazil to lecture at one or more locations, and I asked Dr. Fischer if he could take a slight detour to lecture to my students. He agreed without a second thought, and that lecture and his generosity to go out of his way to visit has always stuck with me. Later, Dr. Fischer came for the opening of the Fahl Center, of which Ultradent is a partner. I’m extremely grateful to Dr. Fischer and Ultradent for helping the Fahl Center realize its full potential as an educational institution. We opened in 1998 and are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year! Ultradent has been an invaluable partner and instrumental in its success in furthering dental education in Brazil and worldwide.

*These interviews have been edited and condensed

Learn more about Ultradent »

5/31/2018 10:36:44 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, dr. flucke, dr However, for this edition of “40 Years of Stories,” we thought we’d reach outside of https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse
Ultradent Then and Now: Dr. Fischer Looks Back on 40 Years of Sacrifice and Triumph!531672018-01-31T16:58:00ZHow does it feel to be celebrating Ultradent’s 40th Anniversary? It seems scary! Where did those years go? How did we get to 40 years already? It seems like we started just 20 years ago at the most and yet, here we are! It is amazing. Time really can fly by. 40-year-anniversary-februaryShaLyse Walker

How does it feel to be celebrating Ultradent’s 40th Anniversary?
It seems scary! When we discovered that we couldn’t afford a lot of the expensive advertisements in the dental journals and publications for our first product, Astringedent® hemostatic, we realized that getting it out there and in the hands of clinicians via sampling would have to be a family effort.

Astringedent® hemostatic’s original packing in 1978 and Astringedent® hemostatic today

Did that experience forge a greater bond between you as a family, because of the teamwork that was involved?
I think it was healthy for us, although I’m speaking for the group. But I truly believe that working together brings you together!

The Fischer family members take a break from manufacturing and shipping in Ultradent’s early days to play basketball

When I say the words, “blue recipe box,” does that ring a bell for you, Dr. Fischer? If so, tell me what comes to mind.
Oh yes. Oh yes. In the beginning days of Ultradent, we had a little blue recipe box that we used blank recipe cards to fill out names of customers, their contact information, street address, and the like. It grew from housing a quarter of an inch of recipe cards, to a half an inch of recipe cards of doctors’ information, to being full of customer information. It’s almost charming that that is what we used then, and that from that little blue recipe box, Ultradent has grown and graduated to housing our customer information in computer databases full of our thousands of customer “recipe cards” from around the world! What a difference 40 years makes. That is a prime example! It really puts it into perspective.

In the beginning days of Ultradent, the company kept customer information in an old blue recipe box

But, I have to say, we didn’t graduate from the little blue recipe box straight to advanced computer databases. The next step was getting an early computer with an 8-inch floppy drive from Ohio Scientific. It was like a glorified typewriter! We also had some tractor-feed forms that we would use for our packing slips and invoices and they had maybe five or six different copies. We truly had the best tractor feed printer you could get at the time but we had so many layers in that invoicing and packing slip info that when we printed everything at the end of the day, someone would have to stand there and pull on the slips to keep the printer moving. It took a lot of time with someone bent over that printer to get everything printed and taken care of. It was a real physical way of seeing how the company was growing—from the little blue recipe box filling up, to the time one had to spend standing over the printer pulling the invoices and packing slips through while they printed at the end of the day!

I also remember, because we mailed everything out ourselves, seeing each and every customer and practice name—and I think of some of those very first customers to this day. I remember Leenie being tickled over two doctors who were in a partnership practice with the last names “Mullen” and “Pullen.” I’ve never forgotten them! We also had a “Dr. Payne,” which we got a kick out of at the time, and that I’ve smiled about all my life.

Ultradent is now a world-renowned dental company, with customers and offices all over the world. When did Ultradent begin to expand internationally? How did that happen?
Our first international customer was Yoshita, a distributor that purchased our products and then sold them in Japan. That was around 1981 or 1982. They had ordered the biggest order of Astringedent hemostatic and the Metal Dento-Infusor® tips we’d ever received at the time.

Dr. Fischer draws blood from his own arm at an international trade show to demonstrate the effectiveness of Astringedent hemostatic

Tell me about some of the people in the industry who you’ve been able to rub shoulders with or who have influenced or helped you in some way throughout this journey.
There are a number of prominent key opinion leaders in the dental industry whose influence have really made an impression on me. The first one that I think of is Dr. Gordon Christensen. He’s always had great ethics and values, and he has been one of the most respected lecturers, researchers, and evaluators Clinicians Report of dental products for as long as I’ve known him. He helped us get a seal of approval from the American Dental Association on our first product, Astringedent hemostatic, as well as approval from the FDA to manufacture and sell it. That really helped us get off the ground and going. Dr. Jim Dunn, who is a very respected dentist and lecturer, and Dr. Lloyd Baum, an innovator in prosthodontics, both supported and championed me. In fact, Dr. Baum asked me to write a chapter in one of his books, “Restorative Techniques for Individual Teeth” about Astringedent hemostatic and the science behind it that allowed me to educate dentists about the benefits of using it.

Dr. Fischer working on a patient as a dental student at Loma Linda University

Dr. Michael Miller, the respected evaluator and doctor behind Reality Esthetics, evaluated Astringedent hemostatic with high marks in those early days, and it helped us get the word out. There truly are so many doctors out there who played a role in Ultradent’s success—too many to name them all, but I am so grateful.

Dr. Fischer in his dental practice in the early 1980s

What are some of the key take-aways and lessons you’ve learned over the forty years since you started Ultradent that you could pass on to others?
First and foremost, if you’re wanting to start a business, and hoping for it to be successful long-term, the most important thing I’ve learned is that you have to make sacrifices—economical, personal, and everything in between. For example, when I received an opportunity to lecture on Astringedent hemostaticand the Metal Dento-Infusor tip in Europe, I was ecstatic, but I was still running my personal dental practice at the time. I knew if I went that I would have to shut down my practice for several days, and we needed that valuable income at the time. So, as much as I wanted to go, I forewent the opportunity and asked Dr. Roger Hicks, a colleague and friend of mine, to go in my place so I could continue to practice.

The Metal-Dento Infusor® tip is used to deliver Astringedent hemostatic

Other sacrifices were in living as frugally as we could in those first few years. In fact, I don’t know that we went out to eat at a restaurant after we started Ultradent in 1978 until the mid-80s!

One other huge lesson I’ve learned along the way is to put my ego aside. If you’re an egotistical leader, you push good people who want to help away. Humility attracts people to working with you in quality ways and allows you to learn from others rather than always relying on yourself. It’s so important to be able to recognize our own mistakes and fix them—there’s not a person in the world who doesn’t make mistakes.

Ultradent’s South Jordan Headquarters had its address changed by the city to Ultradent Drive in 2014

What accomplishment, when it comes to building and growing Ultradent over the last forty years, are you most proud of?
The thing that was the most difficult to do, which is the reason I most proud of it, is that we were able to grow Ultradent to what it is organically, maintaining its status as a private company and being able to stay in control of our company. We’ve also put in place a mechanism that makes it so Ultradent need not ever be sold, which was always my goal. I’m thrilled and grateful for that. We also have a wonderful succession plan in place for the company in the many years to come, and I’m also very proud of that.

Dr. Fischer looks out over Arches National Park in Southern Utah

What do you look forward to for Ultradent in the next, say, forty years??
The main thing I look forward to is good health and the good health of the people around me. At the time, that sum would have represented 33% of our business, relative to what we were making overall. In our U.S. business, we chose to grow organically and not sell our product through distributors, so our business grew at a much slower, but steady, pace. It took time.

65% of what we make, we sell internationally. More than half! I’m happy to say that thanks to our organic (non-distribution) sales model here in the U.S., we’ve built a robust business here in the U.S. that allows us to have personal, direct contact and relationships with our customers, which is very rewarding.

Ultradent’s number of employees has grown from family only in its early years to over 1,600 people worldwide

We didn’t have any employees that weren’t a Fischer family member until about 1982 or 1983. Our home was very private, and we mostly mingled with the kids and families at our small school and in our small church congregation. We hardly ever had people who weren’t family members come inside the home to visit until Ultradent began distributing globally.

At that point, distributors and business people from all over the world would fly into Salt Lake City to meet with Ultradent, and my dad began inviting them to our home for dinners. All of a sudden, people from Sweden, Germany, other countries throughout Europe, and, as the company grew, from every part of the world began coming to our house regularly for dinners! I was a young teenager at the time, and soon enough, we began to forge close friendships with these international visitors as they sat around our dinner table with us.

In addition to the richness that those friendships added to our lives, I quickly realized that perhaps I wasn’t so odd after all, and perhaps we all aren’t so different from one another if we can relate to people from all over the world. These dinners, and later as I got the chance to travel to Europe and elsewhere, taught me the great life lesson that other people are essentially the same as we are on the inside. I realized that even in their differences, those differences are beautiful. Those experiences broadened our horizons and changed our small-minded opinions and the way that we looked at people, cultures, traditions, religions, and issues more than ever before. They opened our eyes to so much and to so many different ways of living from our little, insular world, while at the same time teaching us that we had so much in common too!

Dr. Jessop visiting Germany with her parents, Dr. Dan and Leenie Fischer. I was 15 when I had my first flight ever, with my dad (Dr. Dan Fischer, founder and CEO of Ultradent). I had quite a bit of travel thru my teens attending tradeshows (where we helped run the booth), and accompanying him on the occasional international trip.

When I was about 19-years-old, I accompanied Dad and a several other dentists on a dental humanitarian trip to Soviet Georgia, to do charitable dental work at the local university for people in the town of Tbilisi.

The trip itself was an eye-opener – very different from any prior travel experience. We needed to go thru Moscow to get to Tbilisi. We drove from Moscow International Airport to the much smaller regional airport that serviced Georgia. The infrastructure alongside the highway was a mess. There were bare metal wires along old-fashioned ceramic posts on simple poles, large above-ground water piping leaking everywhere, and cars broken down left and right along the freeway. It was shocking to realize as a "superpower" how rough conditions were for the people there.

We arrived at the regional airport, where the flight out to Tbilisi was severely late. When we finally were allowed on the tarmac out to the plane, we stood in a long line, waiting to board and watching our luggage being manually tossed up into the cargo-hold. (No conveyors). Standing there, we were very surprised to see and hear another plane on the tarmac take a turn to start its takeoff run, with its tail jets pointing straight at us, from a surprisingly close distance. The noise and buffeting of a huge wave of smoke, sand, and debris blown at us was shocking – we still laugh about it whenever we reminisce.

When we boarded the plan in Moscow to fly down to Tbilisi, I couldn't believe my eyes. The plane was in horrible condition. It was very hot and muggy inside, with no airflow or AC of any kind. The odors were intense. There were no overhead compartments, only open shelves, and everything was stacked haphazardly on them, unsecured, including live chickens in cages! People were packed in like sardines, and the flight attendants were sitting on crates because they didn't have chairs. As we began taxiing down the runway to take-off, the engine lumbered along for a very long time before we slowly got off the ground – clearly overloaded or badly maintained. Despite the poor conditions, the people on the plane were very sweet. One offered us an apple, asking with a smile in broken English "have you ever seen anything like this?" We had to reply that "no, we had not," – though I think our meaning and his was very different.

When we arrived in Tbilisi the people were just incredible. They were the most warm and genuine human beings I have ever met. Despite their very poor circumstances, they would have given you anything to make you more comfortable. They were also so grateful for the dental services our team provided and begged us to stay much longer. Their generosity of spirit and kindness, despite living in very humble conditions by our standards, was very touching and humbling.

We got together for a dinner with them on our final night. They sang, danced, drank liberally, and talked and laughed with great gusto. I couldn’t believe how happy they seemed. Coming from such a sheltered background myself, it was amazing how difficult their lives were, and yet how beautiful and kind they were to us. It opened my eyes to the world and it changed my life for the good, forever. They taught me that you don’t have to have things to be happy. They taught me that you don’t have to be wealthy to be joyful.

My travels with Ultradent have shown me that regardless of religion, background, and income level people are amazing everywhere you go. In fact, sometimes, the harder the circumstances, the more beautiful the people are on the inside. In my travels since to other parts of the world—Asia, Europe, Eastern-Europe, South America, etc. —this has proven true everywhere I’ve been. The fundamentalist religious culture I grew up in was very close-minded. My travels in my career with Ultradent have made a huge difference to my life.

One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

Erwin Fischer and his father, Ultradent founder and CEO Dr. Dan Fischer, visiting Milan, Italy around 1987. That is how I defined success. While I still value achieving my goals and the satisfaction that comes from accomplishing something I set out to do, I’ve had a few key experiences that have changed what success means to me over the last few years.

The first experience that made an impact on me was on my very first day at work here at Ultradent. The company had hired me as a brand manager for their new orthodontic division, Opal Orthodontics, and I was literally the first employee of that venture. I remember on my first day, Dr. Fischer —the CEO and founder of Ultradent, and a very busy man—approaching me, crouching down next to the table where I sat during a training, and ensuring that I understood the ins and the outs of the orthodontic bracket by asking me questions. It wasn’t a testing or probing situation to see how much I knew—I could tell he had a vested interest in helping me to understand everything about orthodontics so I could better succeed. From there, he put a lot of trust in me as the first Opal Orthodontics Brand Manager and that trust has continued throughout the years. I could tell on that first day that he was interested in what I had to say. I was impressed by the personal time he took with me, and I could tell he cared.

As the years have gone by, I’ve watched Dr. Fischer and come to realize that what makes Ultradent great is the open marketplace of ideas, listening, and validation that takes place at this company. There is always open access to not just Dr. Fischer, but the executive team and upper management to share our ideas, suggestions, even things we think need to change, and everything is considered and validated equally. I’ve noticed the amount of listening that takes place, and I truly believe that because of that, the best ideas are able to rise to the top without ego getting in the way. That is why, I believe, we’ve been able to innovate so prolifically and consistently. The concept of taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture and taking time to listen comes from the top and is perhaps the greatest thing I’ve learned during my time here at Ultradent.

Steve participates in our annual gratitude/Thanksgiving blog post

One experience where this concept truly came into play was just after I took the job of managing our Global Core Marketing Team (GMCT). The team came to Utah from countries from all over the world for a retreat. Together, we hopped in a bus and headed down to Las Vegas for our retreat. I learned so much on that bus ride, and I think it’s partly due to the fact that we were finally all face to face. We could connect and see the emotion in each other’s faces as we talked about each team member’s successes and challenges in their various countries and how we could apply those success stories to other markets. Really spending time together and listening to each person’s unique experiences unified us as a global team—and company—in the highest sense. It was a great opportunity to truly understand each other, despite coming from such different backgrounds and cultures. It made me want to listen more often than I spoke so we could make decisions that were good for everyone and so they could know I truly understood and cared about them.

In my many travels throughout the world since then, I always remind myself to set aside the role of “the American” in a foreign country and to get to know their culture and their stories. That’s when the “aha” moments come, even if it means being outside of my comfort zone.

I’ve loved all of my roles at Ultradent—from brand management to working with the GMCT, from merchandising to being over our Opalescence Tooth Whitening line, from being the Director of Marketing to now sales—and the biggest thing I’ve learned is to listen. It applies to every aspect of the company. I no longer define my success by title or monetary gains. Success to me is learning to appreciate the importance of time and relationships and that everybody has a story and everyone is worthy of our time. If we take the time to listen to their ideas and their story, they can affect our lives for the better. Success to me is about the relationships I build while I’m here. It’s the most important and I value it above everything else.

Olga Mencnarowska

International Regional Manager over Northeastern Europe

12 Years at Ultradent

One could say that I learned what was special about Ultradent before I even came to work here. Let me explain.

Prior to coming to Ultradent over 12 years ago, I had worked for a competitor company in the dental industry that I enjoyed. Having received an offer from Ultradent, I felt very torn. I truly didn’t know if I should leave the job and company I had become so comfortable and familiar with until I got a glimpse into Ultradent’s people and culture.

One night, shortly after my interview with Ultradent while I was still trying to decide what to do, Steve Gerber called me pretending, in his goofy way, to be George Clooney, inviting me to a movie premiere in Salt Lake City. At that very same time, one of the former international sales managers at Ultradent whose name was Shaun wrote me an email titled, “Top Ten Reasons You Should Join Ultradent.” Those personal, unique, and fun interactions were all I needed to know that this was a company I wanted to be a part of. I made my decision right away and have enjoyed every single moment since then.

The personal care every single person in this company exhibits to one other is extraordinary, including Dr. Fischer and upper management. I have a few stories to exhibit that.

The first time I met Dr. Fischer, I remember getting that strong, sincere, trademark hug of friendship that he’s famous for. A little later, on a trip to Sweden, we were traveling together and I had just gotten knee surgery five days earlier. I’ll never forget Dr. Fischer pushing me on an airport trolley all the way from the plane to baggage claim so I didn’t have to walk. He didn’t just create the value of “care.” He truly lives it.

On another international trip, I unfortunately contracted food poisoning in the country of Georgia, and on top of that, I was pregnant. I sat next to Dr. Fischer on the airplane, throwing up the entire time, and he took care of me. At one point, he literally picked me up off the floor because I couldn’t move, I was so sick. I’m truly a lucky girl to have experienced the personal care that everyone, not just Dr. Fischer, shows to one another. I have no doubt that any of the amazing people who work at Ultradent wouldn’t hesitate to take you into their own homes should you ever need help.

Olga and Dr. Fischer hit the slopes at Brighton Ski Resort in Utah

While we’re on the topic of memories and stories, I couldn’t let this opportunity pass without sharing a crazy experience that I shared with Dr. Rich Tuttle while we were traveling in Yalta (a Russian territory taken from Ukraine). While we were in the airport there, we received notice that our flight had been canceled at 3:00 a.m. and that we had to find a place to stay for the night. So, we set out into the surrounding forest with our suitcases to find a hotel. When we finally came to the closest one, we were told it was completely full. So, we set out into the dark night once again, but this time, Dr. Tuttle had a knife in his hand for protection “just in case”! We finally got to another hotel in the middle of nowhere and they only had one room available. We shrugged our shoulders and shared the $10/night room but when we got in, it was so dirty, we were afraid to sleep. It was fully of rusty pipes, it had dirty beds, and there were bugs and spiders everywhere. Morning couldn’t come soon enough!

Finally, we got back to the airport and boarded a very suspicious looking plane (that we were afraid might crash), but luckily, it landed safely in St. Petersburg where Dr. Tuttle gave an excellent lecture to the awaiting Russian dentists. It’s an experience I’ll never forget but we confronted it and got through it together!

I have truly loved my time here at Ultradent and getting to know different people and cultures from all over the world. I not only consider them my colleagues whom I respect, but I see them as my extended family and wonderful friends who would do anything for each other. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Fischer illustrates this: “If your hand is open to give, it is open to receive.”

Learn more about Ultradent »

7/2/2018 6:56:06 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, steve clark, olga a few key experiences that have changed what success means to me over the last few years https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

Quite shy! In a crowded room, I was always the wall flower, but I loved dental assisting. Then, when the opportunity to work for Ultradent came around, I started coming out of my shell as I had to go in to dental offices as a sales rep.

Later, as a regional manager, again, I blossomed a little bit more. After a few years in that position, I became a product trainer and remember distinctly a few occasions where I would talk to my mother on the phone and say, “Oh, I have a class of 30 people to train today,” or “I’m going to speak at our National Sales Meeting and I have 100 people to present to.” One day she stopped me and said, “Oh my gosh, Karen, how do you do that? You’re SO shy!”

Karen giving one of the many lectures she’s performed throughout her career

It stopped me in my tracks and it was an “Aha!” moment for me. That moment was a real marker for me in my career because I had almost forgotten that I used to be shy and to look back and go, “How did I get here?!” was amazing.

I realized, and told my mom, that when you love what you do, and you’re passionate about it, you gain confidence. I mean, I went from being incredibly timid to public speaking and presenting for a living!

I believe this all happened because Ultradent recognizes passion in people and fosters growth in those areas. That’s what I love the most about Ultradent. The only reason I’m in the position I am today as the director of U.S. sales is because Ultradent identified and recognized the passion I had for our products at the beginning, and helped me cultivate it and build on it by making me a trainer, which helped develop my skills further to help me become what I am today. I thank God for that and that I’m part of a company that does that for and with their people.

 Nicolas Sondaz

 Las Americas General Manager

12 Years at Ultradent

Something about my time here that really stands out for me is that Ultradent has provided the environment that caused me to make a huge change in my personal life that has, in turn, greatly changed and influenced my professional life as well.

About ten years ago, Ultradent organized a distributor meeting that was to take place in the summer at the South Jordan, Utah headquarters. As part of the meeting, Ultradent was planning a very small 5K race, and although I wasn’t involved in any sports or fitness activities at the time, this little race got me hyped about training for it.

The week that I arrived in South Jordan for the meeting, I trained every day with Fabio Fowler. I wasn’t really competitive at that time, but I decided I would give this short race my all.

Well, the race came around and to my surprise and shock, I finished in second place and I got a little prize and recognition. This was a real turning point. For the rest of the meeting, I received many compliments from people, urging me to keep pursuing running, so when I returned home, I started entering and training for more small races, then, over time, they got longer and longer.

Then, from running long races and even marathons, I was inspired by Dirk Jeffs, Ultradent’s president, to start doing triathlons and eventually several Iron Man triathlons.

Nicolas running one of the many races he’s competed in over the last 10 years

It’s been ten years and exercise and fitness has become my passion and my main hobby. I absolutely love it. This happened because of the encouragement of my Ultradent colleagues and my wonderful first experience with that small 5K at Ultradent. It helped me to discover that I had a talent for this and it has truly changed my life. It would be difficult to count how many races, triathlons, long-distance runs, and ultra-trail runs (40, 100, 120, and 160 kilometers) I’ve done since then. I’ve got a big race next month in Argentina that I’m looking forward to! I run a race almost every weekend.

However, the real change in myself that I’ve seen through this process is the focus I’ve gained in my career, the reduction of stress, and the increase in energy and efficiency when it comes to my career. When I’m exercising in the morning, it gives me so much time to clear my head, strategize, and prioritize what’s most important for my work that day. I make my best decisions when I’m training versus when I’m working on my computer or in an office setting with interruptions. It is my special time and it’s become essential for me to perform at the highest level in my career. Sports have taught me balance, improved my nutrition, improved the quality of my sleep immensely, elevated my moods, and lowered my stress levels.

Were it not for my career at Ultradent and the inspirational people I’ve been surrounded by through this company, I don’t know that I would be the man who I am today.

Steve Gerber

Sales Trainer & International Lecturer

25 Years at Ultradent

I travel around the world for about half of the calendar year, training and lecturing to Ultradent’s dealers, distributors, sales reps, and managers. I’ve been everywhere from Russia, the Middle East, China, all over Western and Eastern Europe, North, South, and Central America, and beyond. Although I’ve had many incredible experiences, there’s one that stands out as very special for me.

Steve Gerber lecturing to a group of doctors in Asia

I was traveling around Central America in the mid-2000s about ten to twelve years ago when we flew into Nicaragua for a morning lecture/training session with a group of dealers. We landed and went straight to the motel where the lecture was taking place. The motel was layed out in a “U” shape, with rooms and conference rooms, as well as the lobby, surrounding the hotel pool. The lobby had glass windows that looked out on the pool and so did many of the meeting rooms.

We planned to stay overnight, so the dealer who was hosting us took our bags straight to the hotel where we were staying, while we stayed at the motel where the meetings were scheduled so we could set up and prepare. We arrived a bit early, so I had some time to kill before our meetings started.

It’s incredibly hot and humid in Nicaragua and I was wearing a suit and tie so I decided to go look for a little shop where I could buy a bottle of water. Upon returning, I walked into the motel lobby and heard a woman screaming “Ayudame! Ayudame!” (Spanish for “Help me!”) from the pool area behind the lobby, but no one was doing anything. Everyone was just standing there, frozen, looking at this poor woman.

I ran through the lobby to the pool area and saw the woman frantically pointing toward the deep end of the pool, but the bottom of the pool was painted white, and at first, I didn’t see anything. Then, suddenly, I saw a little head of black hair, and realized that her son, who was probably two or three years old, was wearing a white t-shirt and had sunk to the bottom of the pool. I realized no one was doing anything because no one—neither the kids nor the adults—could swim and this little boy was at the bottom of a six or seven-foot-deep pool.

Having no idea how long he’d been down there, I flipped my shoes off and dove in with my suit coat, tie, socks, pants, wallet, cell phone…everything. I grabbed the little boy, he must have weighed 35 or 40 pounds, and he was totally limp. I still don’t know how I did it to this day, but I took him in my arms, swam up to the top of the pool, and by some miracle, was able to raise him out of the water and put him on the edge of the pool without anything below my feet to leverage the weight because the bottom was much farther down than I was. It’s moving to me, how I was able to do that without sinking us both deeper into the pool.

After I got him to the side of the pool, I lifted myself out, and in that moment, I was just sick to my stomach because I had a son that age at the time and I truly thought the boy was dead. Nevertheless, I started chest compressions and CPR until he started throwing up water and coughing. After a few moments, the ambulance arrived and he sat up, gasped for air, and his eyes fluttered open. The paramedics then rushed him and his mother off.

A few moments later, I walked back into the motel and my American colleague who was traveling with me, completely oblivious to what had just occurred, saw me soaking wet in my suit in the hall and the most perplexed look came over his face. He said, “Steve! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” and I said, in my joking and sarcastic way, “I had a few minutes before the lecture, I thought I’d take a swim!”

We still had a few minutes before the lecture so I was able to run to our hotel and change my clothes. But unbeknownst to me at the time, that colleague of mine called my wife and told her, “You will not believe what your husband just did. He just jumped in a pool and saved a kid’s life. He just performed a miracle.”

Anyway, my phone was completely fried, my suit was ruined, but we did the lecture. However, I don’t believe I was in Nicaragua on that day to do that lecture. I believe we were there for a very different reason, and I’m grateful I was in the right place at the right time.

Post Script: Steve Gerber later received the Dan E. Fischer Award for his heroic act of bravery and poise under pressure for saving that young boy’s life.

Learn more about Ultradent »

4/4/2018 3:47:50 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, karen phillips, nicolas long-distance runs, and ultra-trail runs (40, 100, 120, and 160 kilometers) I’ve done https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

We first stopped in Holland, where my long-term friend and consultant Ger Bastiaans graciously hosted us. I’ve known Ger and his lovely family for over 27 years!

From Holland, we travelled to Italy, where our fabulous director over Southern Europe, Aurelio Gisco, showed us the wonders of Tuscany and Northern Italy. While there, Leenie and I celebrated our 40 years of marriage—enjoying the honeymoon we never had when we married in the summer of 1973.

Celebrating 40 years of marriage with my bride, Leenie.

It has been several years since I’ve lectured to the dentists of Australia, so I spent my time “down under” visiting and presenting in the country’s three largest cities: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Like I said, this industry is a “small town on a global basis,” and I was surprised to learn that I had first met the new manager of one of our distributors in Australia, Gordon Anderson, in South Africa in 1992, when we first launched Opalescence! It was a great surprise and a pleasure to reconnect.

Standing in Front of Sydney Harbour Bridge with Nicholas Sondaz and Trevor Martin.

We have some incredibly loyal dentists in Australia who have been our customers for many years. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined all the things we would experience and accomplish together, but am grateful beyond belief. I often say it this because its true: the truth is stranger than fiction—and in the case of Ultradent, that’s a great thing! As we move into a new decade for the company and march toward our next big milestone, Ultradent’s 50th anniversary in 2028, there are a lot of positive changes and growth I hope to see, but there are some things that I will make sure to never ever change.

Ultradent started as a small family-only company in 1978 and now boasts over 1,600 employees worldwide.

In the next ten years, I expect some great things out of Ultradent. In fact, I often say that our best products haven’t even been invented yet. I expect us to bring more exciting products to the market that will allow dentists to provide even better dentistry, thus meeting our vision of improving oral health globally.

Some things will, however, always stay the same. The first is that our products will always preserve patients’ natural enamel and tissue, which upholds our philosophy of promoting and advancing minimally invasive dentistry. This is and will always remain top of mind and our first priority when it comes to product development at Ultradent.

Second, our brand will and must always remain trustworthy and progressive to the clinician. Not only will Ultradent uphold its standards of truth and ethics in advertising, but we will also always strive to never be a “me too” product company. True innovation, shunning gimmicks and trends, and providing solutions backed by solid research that clinicians can trust when it comes to investing their hard-earned dollars in our technology, equipment, and products is so very important to us, and will never, ever change.

Third, we will continue to strive toward finding a way to prevent caries and gum disease. That has always and will always be our ultimate goal.

I expect Ultradent to continue on the great trajectory and path that it is on and that we’ve been so fortunate to walk these past 40 years, be it the quality of people, the products, procedures, and techniques we innovate and promote, and of course, our culture and core values.

Looking back at photos of myself at some of our very first trade shows, drawing my own blood to demonstrate how our first and only products at the time—Astringedent® hemostatic and our Metal Dento-Infusor® tip —worked to coagulate the blood, I marvel at the progress and growth we’ve experienced as a “little dental company from Utah.”

Dr. Fischer draws his own blood to demonstrate Ultradent’s first product, Astringedent® hemostatic, at an early trade show.

We’re now in almost every country in the world, and we are continuing to grow. Here I was, a complete stranger to him, and before I knew it, we were swapping life stories and bonding over the many commonalities we shared. I knew Ultradent was a place I definitely wanted to work when I learned of Dr. Fischer’s passion for family, employee appreciation, and his enthusiasm for work and for life in general. In my 45-year career, that was something I’d never found anywhere else at any other company!

My favorite thing about my job is the interaction I have on a daily basis with our teams. Coaching, supporting them, and then watching them master their challenges and grow is extremely fulfilling to me. I love how happy our manufacturing employees are, but early on I noticed that on a rare occasion one or more of our team members would seem down. I love making people smile, so the first time I noticed this I just broke out dancing on the manufacturing floor. All of a sudden several of the operators quickly joined in and were smiling and laughing in no time! Now dancing on the production floor has become my trademark and is sort of a tradition. I’ve become such good friends with so many of my colleagues here. While we take our jobs very seriously, we also make it a point to have a lot of fun. It’s gone as far as me, as a practical joke, putting David Atherley’s truck “up for sale” in the Ultradent parking lot. We got a really good laugh out of that!

Another great example of the personal effort Dr. Fischer puts in to make employees and customers feel welcome is how many times he’s opened up his home for employees, distributors, and customers. Many of the meetings have gotten too big over the years, so he’s had to move it to a tent or to his yard, but for years, he would invite up to 200 people into his home and they would move all the furniture out of the living room and bedrooms and everyone would mingle and socialize throughout the rooms in the house. It would get loud and crowded, but those dinners account for some of the most meaningful and memorable customer interactions I’ve had.

Lastly, I love that Ultradent is a private, family-owned company. As the vice president of finance, this has made such a difference in my day-to-day career because we’re able to focus on the company’s long-term financial success instead of exclusively trying to appeal to the financial market with every whim. It’s made my career very fulfilling and I believe it’s a huge part of why Ultradent is so successful today!

Learn more about Ultradent »

8/31/2018 8:06:16 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, chuck anger, mark For this edition of “40 Years of Stories,” we thought we’d chat with a couple of https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

After graduating from dental school, I came to work for Ultradent full-time, and in 2002, moved to Utah to work at the corporate headquarters for four years before being transferred to our subsidiary in Italy, where I spent five years before returning to help manage our plant in Brazil after that.

Fabio celebrating the 4th of July at Dirk’s home in Utah, 2002

What stands out the most to me in my experiences over the years is the personal investment that Ultradent puts into their employees to help them grow. When I moved to Utah, I had only been to two countries in my entire life. Dirk Jeffs, who is now Ultradent’s president, helped me with my visa and all of my paperwork, enrolled me in Spanish classes to prepare me for my new job managing our Latin America accounts and picked me up at the airport when I first landed in Salt Lake City. He even went as far as co-signing on my first car and helping me find my first apartment in the United States! He was truly my mentor in every sense of the word. He bought me management and leadership books, he signed me up for business classes, he helped me move—packing up boxes and my mattress on his truck and taking the them to my new house, and he encouraged me to obtain my MBA degree, which I did at his alma mater at BYU. He really changed the way I work, taught me a great deal about organization, and encouraged my growth as a person and in this business.

Fabio Fowler, Dirk Jeffs, and Dr. Fischer in Brasilia, Brazil, 2012

I remember once in a lecture he said, “You can’t be the chicken, you have to be the pig.” What he meant by that was that you can’t just lay an egg and consider it done. I love empowering them and watching them grow, just as I loved learning these principles.

Last, and perhaps most importantly, I am grateful for the opportunities and trust Dr. Fischer has given me over the years, and how he’s embraced me like I’m family. He has certainly made a tremendous impact on where my life is today. In fact, when I first started at Ultradent, I always said I never wanted to marry or have kids. I remember Dr. Fischer telling me how great families are and how it’s the most important thing in life to raise kids and watch them grow. So, when I told him I was getting married and then when I was pregnant with my son, Joshua, he was so excited. I respect Dr. Fischer for taking a personal interest in me both personally and professionally over the years. I cherish my time here at Ultradent for those and many other reasons. My family left Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, France to emigrate to Canada in the 1600s. It was magical!

When we walked into the town hall I told the man working there my last name. He knew of my family and our history. He looked at me as if I were a celebrity! Dirk Jeffs, Ultradent’s President, Looks Back on Meaningful Moments from His Storied Career531992018-09-26T16:03:00ZAfter being here at Ultradent for 22 years, I can tell you one thing. I was exploring my options and career passions, and thought Ultradent might be a stepping stone in that path…but I’m getting ahead of myself.40-year-anniversary-octoberShaLyse Walker

Dirk Jeffs

President of Ultradent

22 Years at Ultradent

After being here at Ultradent for 22 years, I can tell you one thing. I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever work at a company this long. In fact, when I started here at 29 years old, I had worked for three years at my first job, and one year at my second job after college. I was exploring my options and career passions, and thought Ultradent might be a stepping stone in that path…but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Let’s back up to the job I worked before coming to Ultradent. It was at an electronics company, and I made a great friend there—a colleague—by the name of Steve Gerber. Well, soon enough, Steve had left to go work for Ultradent, and since he had become someone I had grown to trust a great deal, when he called me to tell me what a dynamic, growing company it was, raving about what a great guy the founder and CEO was, I was interested. Luckily, Ultradent was looking for someone to manage their international sales, which fit my background perfectly, so I applied on the advice of Steve.

I’ll never forget my first interview with Dr. Fischer. He happened to be in Las Vegas for a dental convention, and I met him in the pool area of one of the hotels on the strip to discuss the job opportunity. In our conversation, Dr. Fischer’s energetic, enthusiastic, and visionary focus immediately struck me. Without having ever stepped a foot in Ultradent’s headquarters before, I knew just from learning about the company through its leader, Dr. Fischer, that I wanted to be a part of it. I got this sense of authenticity and integrity from him that made me feel like Ultradent was, without a doubt, the place for me. In fact, during that interview, Dr. Fischer noticed that I had stayed for short periods of time at my previous jobs (three years and one year, respectively,) and he told me that if I came to work at Ultradent, I would need to commit to staying until I turned 35. There’s a quote I’ve since heard Dr. Fischer share by Johan Wolfgang von Goethe that says, “At the moment of commitment, the entire universe conspires to assist you.” I believe that’s what happened that day…and needless to say, I made it to 35! I believe there is power in fully committing to a company, a project, a competition, etc., and when you do, that’s when the magic happens!

Two weeks after I landed the job, Dr. Fischer invited me to accompany him on a trip to Poland and Israel, where he was scheduled to lecture. Quite honestly, I felt a bit nervous heading out on a ten-day trip with the CEO, but Dan (Dr. Fischer) was so easy to talk and relate to that he put me at ease very quickly.

On the morning of the first lecture in Warsaw, Poland, the room quickly filled up with dentists eager to learn from Dan. There were probably close to 300 people there! Just prior to the start of the lecture, Dr. Fischer asked me to go with him to the bathroom. In the bathroom he shared with me that he was going to draw his own blood for the doctors to that he could squirt it on a white plate to demonstrate how quickly and effectively Ultradent’s first product, Astringedent® hemostatic , could coagulate the blood. He then asked me to use my hands to squeeze his upper arm so he could more easily draw his own blood. I am a bit squeamish when it comes to blood, but I did as I was told! I squeezed his upper arm tightly, and looked away as Dr. Fischer drew the blood he needed for the demonstration. At first, I was a bit traumatized by this surprise scenario, but realized that it was all worth it when I witnessed how impressed the audience of dentists were with Dr. Fischer’s creative way of showing his product’s effectiveness!

Dirk Jeffs (second from left) works a trade show early in his career at Ultradent.

From then and through the years that followed, I served as the manager of international sales, director of international sales, and vice-president of sales and marketing before being made president of Ultradent in 2016.

One of the proudest, most memorable and meaningful moments from my career has to be the day we opened our very first foreign office in Cologne, Germany. It came after great study and debate, and it represented a paradigm for us in terms of international distribution, which led to us eventually modifying a lot of our terms in that sense, and opening many, many more offices globally. That initial opening in Cologne marked a change in Ultradent's goals and mission, leading us to a point now where we are able to reach doctors in every corner of the world.

Despite the many positions I’ve held, one thing has remained a constant, and that is the love I have of working with the incredible people here at Ultradent, both domestically and abroad. Ultradent has amazing, smart, talented, hard-working people from literally all walks of life and all corners of the world. The diversity within the company is astounding and incredibly interesting to me. It is a source of immense strength for Ultradent. I count many of my fantastic international colleagues among my closest and best friends from working together through the years, and having been exposed to their various cultures, thoughts, and ideas is something I absolutely treasure. Our people at Ultradent are without a doubt our greatest, most valuable asset, and they’re what make Ultradent such a special place.

In fact, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen an employee leave Ultradent for one reason or another, only to decide later that they regretted leaving. They often then come back to Ultradent with a new-found perspective on how truly amazing a company it is. Of course, we’re not perfect. We make mistakes and we are always looking to improve, but that too is part of what makes Ultradent a great place—the spirit of continuous improvement, and an environment that encourages its people to try new things and that makes it safe for those things to sometimes fail in order to learn new ways to improve.

When I think about the many ways in which Ultradent is unique from its competitors and really, from any other company in general, is our deeply-rooted, wonderful culture. The family feeling, the hospitality, and the care that is felt throughout any of our offices from any of our colleagues around the world is what truly stands out. I am humbled by the respect, care, and diversity of talent in the many different departments of Ultradent that work together as a team to make Ultradent successful. We need each one of those people. We all care for each other like family, and many customers and people on the outside notice that and comment on it in glowing terms. Our culture is very, very special, and as such, it must be preserved in the years to come!

We’ve reached the 40-year mark as a company, and with that, I see a unique opportunity for us to look forward to the next ten years, toward our 50th anniversary, and make some goals for where we want to be and what we want to have accomplished by 2028.

I believe our vision serves as a great guide to where we’re heading. Continuing to improve oral health globally will be the big job and the largest goal for all of us in the years to come. We must continue to increase our reach to more doctors and more patients with our cutting-edge technologies and chemistries all over the world. I agree with Dr. Fischer’s statement that, while we have many amazing products that are making a real difference for clinicians and patients, our best products are yet to come. They haven’t been invented yet! I firmly believe that. We must and will continue to innovate and provide progressive and trustworthy solutions that respect the oral tissues of the patient and make life easier for practitioners. I envision this kind of growth and innovation coming from our talented Ultradent colleagues in every department and from every skillset level in the company.

I also expect that Digital will play an increasingly important role in how we operate, communicate, and transact business with our customers.

As for myself, I feel a major part of my role and responsibility moving forward is to ensure that the things that have enabled our success to this point—our culture, our brand (trustworthy and progressive), and our core values—do not get compromised, but rather, grow stronger.

As I look back, I feel immense gratitude for my time, experiences, and relationships that have contributed to my personal growth throughout my career here at Ultradent, and I look forward to doing all that I can help shepherd Ultradent to greater heights, increased growth, and to continuing to build, preserve, and enrich the fantastic legacy that is our culture in the years to come.

Learn more about Ultradent »

9/28/2018 8:30:40 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, dirk jeffs, dr of time at my previous jobs (three years and one year, respectively,) and he told me that if I https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

Of the brand’s sensational growth both nationally and internationally over the last 25 years, Dr. Fischer, president and CEO of Ultradent Products, Inc., says frankly, “It’s beyond what I could have imagined.”

Peter Allred, Ultradent’s Technology Director over Formulations, came to work at Ultradent in 1991, just one year after the advent of Opalescence PF. He’s quick to attribute not only Opalescence’s growth, but the huge international whitening “craze” largely in part to Dr. Fischer. “Dr. Fischer is the originator of contemporary whitening as we know it—which has now gained worldwide acceptance. He is the person responsible for bringing it to the masses. Prior to sticky-viscous whitening products like Opalescence PF gel, yes, there was whitening, but it wasn’t convenient. It was liquid that came in horrible tray systems—and the product would run down the patient’s throat—it was just awful.”

Dr. Fischer’s motivation to find a whitening gel viscous enough to stay on the teeth came from a source closer than most would guess—his own 14-year-old daughter, Jaleena. At the time, she continually came to her dad, day after day, with the same plea—“Dad, what can we do to make my teeth whiter? How close are you to finding something that can make my teeth whiter?”

After months in the lab, Dr. Fischer finally perfected the first take-home gel of what has now become the foundation for the complete line of Opalescence tooth whitening products. He didn’t rest until the gel had the sticky, viscous composition he wanted—the perfect composition for keeping the gel in place.

To celebrate this accomplishment, he brought it home to his first eager customer, Jaleena. Within these categories, Ultradent offers a variety of products and prices to fit every individual’s lifestyle.

Ultimately, Dr. Fischer says that the immense growth of Opalescence has not only been surprising and beyond his wildest dreams, but it’s also been an incredibly satisfying journey. Since the morning when he first witnessed the wonder in his daughter’s eyes as she saw how quickly, painlessly, and easily she could whiten her teeth—so has been the case with thousands of other happy patients throughout the world. This rings true in a saying Dr. Fischer can often be heard quoting by Winston Churchill that goes, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Happy birthday, Opalescence!

4/18/2016 8:35:59 PMOpalescence® celebrates a very exciting anniversary in this month—25 years since Opalescence® PF, Ultradent’s premier That was 25 years ago this July https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

It’s a wild coincidence that I’ve never forgotten.

It all started in Autumn 2004. Although I didn’t work in the dental industry, I visited an old friend of mine in Cologne, Germany, who was there for a local trade show. When I walked into the trade show, my immediate perception of the whole show was dark, boring, and full of uninspired people in suits all over the place. That is…except for one booth that was completely outstanding to me. This particular booth had far more visitors than any of the others, and the people behind its counters looked open, energetic, and friendly. They all looked like they had a story to tell. However, the most obvious difference was how they were dressed. They all wore colored shirts that I later learned represented the three flavors of the precursor product to Opalescence Go® whitening, the Tréswhite disposable whitening system. The flavors were Mint, Melon, and Peach. I knew this company was different.

As I approached the booth to get a closer look, and by another crazy coincidence, I knew one of the Ultradent employees working there! In fact, we had worked together at another company a couple of years before. We started chatting and the story ends (or begins) with me signing a contract with Ultradent a few weeks later.

Heinz Seidl’s team gets hyped at the Ultradent booth at a trade show

I went to the IDS tradeshow the following year— this time, working for Ultradent— and met Dr. Fischer. I watched him as he approached every employee and called them by name, hugging them and treating them like family. Having come from a large stock-listed company before working at Ultradent, I knew this was going to be different. Since then, Dr. Fischer has become a huge mentor for me.

Heinz (blue shirt) smiles with some of his Ultradent colleagues from around the world.

That leads to me to my final anecdote. It’s about a very special phone call I received in late 2015.

It was evening in Germany, and I was on my way home from work. It was cold, rainy, and stormy, and suddenly, my cell phone rang. I looked down and saw that Dr. Fischer was trying to reach me. Due to the wind, I couldn’t keep on walking while speaking, so I found a bit of shelter for the phone call. I still remember saying, “Hi Dan, I’m sure you’re calling me for something important at this time. You just need to understand that it’s cold and I’m getting wet so I might not be that communicative. I trust you, as you know, so whatever you called to say or propose, you get an automatic ‘yes’ from me!” He replied by saying, ““Well. I just wanted to ask you if you are willing to take over the position of General Manager for Northeast Europe. Thank you for saying “yes” so quickly. Congratulations!” Unforgettable, isn’t it?

Melanie Jones

Director of eBusiness

25 Years at Ultradent

When I was hired at Ultradent as a teenager, I never thought my job would turn into a career here. My first position was working on the molding floor where I sat at a table inspecting syringes for quality defects. There were a few other girls working at my table—some American, some Laotian—and we all had fun talking while working. Though I dragged my feet about going to work after school every night, I really did look forward to seeing them every day. We generally worked Saturday mornings as well and we planned elaborate breaks where we would bring lots of different toppings for hot chocolate or have potluck lunches. Later, one of the Laotian girls asked me to be the maid of honor at her wedding. It was my first experience with a wedding from another culture and I was honored to have been asked—especially when I saw the size of her family. I didn’t understand what was said in the ceremony and had never even heard of the delicious food they served. That opened my eyes to a different way of living, which was just a preview of what was to come in my career at Ultradent.

Later, when I returned from college, I accepted a position working as the international regional manager for the Americas and South Africa. During my time in this position, Dr. Fischer was asked to lecture in Chile and Argentina and I accompanied him. The flight attendant upgraded Dr. Fischer to first class due to loyalty status, and my seat was located clear in the back of the plane. I settled in for the flight and started a game of Solitaire. Not long after takeoff, Dr. Fischer made his way to the back of the plane and sat in the open seat next to me. He stayed and talked to me for quite some time before returning to his seat to sleep. I was so impressed with how humble and friendly it was of him to seek me out in the back of the plane.

Dr. Fischer and Melanie with the Grimberg family, operators of Ultradent’s distribution partner in Argentina

After one of the lectures in Argentina, our distribution partners took us to a nice Argentinian steakhouse, similar to the Brazilian churrascarias that have popped up around the U.S. I’m a lightweight, so it wasn’t long before I turned my coaster from green to red. Then, one of the servers brought out a new skewer and our Argentinian partners insisted that I try some of this one. “What is it?” I asked. “If we tell you, you won’t try,” they said. “Estoy satisfecha,” I replied. I’ve had enough. They continued to insist. “Is it blood sausage?” I asked. I really don’t like blood sausage. They assured me it was not blood sausage and that I had nothing to fear. They continued to insist that I must try it because they are famous for this particular dish. Again, I declined and they persisted. Finally, I promised them that if they would tell me what it was, I would taste it, no matter what. The two of them grinned smugly and said, “It’s blood sausage.” I groaned. Dr. Fischer turned to me and said, “Well, Mel. I guess it’s time to find out which of you is the most honest.” I ate the sausage.

Once, before a business trip to Venezuela, I accidentally got a terrible sunburn. It was so bad that my entire face was swollen and my eyes were reduced to slits—my dermatologist said I had 2nd degree burns! Nevertheless, I still traveled to Venezuela for the trade show and while I demonstrated products at the booth, the conversation inevitably turned to my sunburn. “This is ViscoStat,” I’d say. “What happened to your face?” they’d ask. “Sunburn. Anyway, if you use this tip to burnish the solution into the capillaries…” They would interrupt with, “You should have worn sunblock.” I’d laugh and say, “True, but back to ViscoStat.” They just couldn’t focus—I really was a sight to behold. “Have you tried putting vinegar on it?” Each of them had advice for what I should put on the burn—aloe gel straight from the leaf of an aloe vera plant, milk of magnesia, and many other remedies. I don’t think I sold much at that show, but I definitely made an impression. When I returned to Caracas a year later for the next exhibition, dentists would approach the booth and say, “You’re the girl with the sunburn!”

Melanie with Dr. Erin Hymel and Dr. Sarita Arteaga at Icons of Dentistry.

One of the most memorable and fulfilling experiences I’ve had in my career was to participate on the planning committee for Icons of Dentistry: A Workshop for Women. Not only was I able to collaborate with brilliant minds from all over Ultradent, but I enjoyed learning from the varied perspectives of women who attended from all over the world. It was a good reminder that no matter who we are or where we come from, people usually have more commonalities than they have differences. I am bonded to some of those women for life. Even better, I can already see through social media that some of these women—who were total strangers before—left with new best friends and confidantes. That was what our committee hoped we could give with the workshop and to see it come true was so rewarding. My heart was full.

There are almost too many stories and lessons to tell. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to travel throughout Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, learning different ways to live and think from our overseas partners and colleagues. Dr. Fischer likes to quote Mark Twain, who said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” I know travel has helped me with that. I’m so lucky to have connected with so many people and cultures through this amazing job. It has changed me forever.

Learn more about Ultradent »

8/7/2018 10:29:53 PM40 year anniversary, ultradent, ultradent 40 years, red rock, arches, melanie jones, heinz I went to the IDS tradeshow the following year— this time, working for Ultradent— and met https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse

But, even from the beginning, Dr. Fischer said he always had a good feeling about its potential. “When we first discovered how much more effective and comfortable that sticky, viscous formulation could be, with comfort added by the soft, thin scalloped tray that didn’t lap on the gums, that was a paradigm. I was so excited.”

Before then, the bleaching agents on the market were runny liquids that often came in dropper bottle that you would put in a thick sports guard mouth piece. Patients would end up swallowing the gel, getting a sore throat, and after 40 minutes, were so uncomfortable they were about to pull their hair out. It wasn’t a comfortable process, and it would take 4–6 weeks to see a significant change.

In contrast, he recalls the first time he put Opalescence gel in his daughter Jaleena’s custom tray to wear overnight. She woke up to teeth that were seven shades whiter!1

Indeed, Opalescence made an instant impact. “Doctors from all over the country wanted to try it and we ended up having to convert the first building on this property, that was being used as a welding shop, into the Opalescence building. We bought a much larger mixer, remodeled the inside, and it became dedicated to Opalescence,” Dr. Fischer reminisced.

All of Opalescence’s whitening gels contain potassium nitrate and fluoride. Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity. Fluoride has been shown to help reduce caries and strengthen enamel. Together they help to improve the overall health of the teeth.2–6

Most importantly, for the last 24 years, Opalescence has helped bring sparkle and confidence to smiles all around the world.

Happy Birthday, Opalescence!

1. Creating Quality, Long-Lasting Dentistry Is like Creating a Quality, Long-Lasting Marriage: Part I3788312014-02-26T06:03:50ZFor sure, I’m a lucky guy. Just this past July, my beautiful bride, Leenie, and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert on marriage, but over my 35 years in the dental industry and 40 wonderful years with my wife, I can’t help but have noticed a few parallels between dentistry and marriage. I strongly believe that for a “tooth-centered restoration” to succeed in the long run, it is paramount that it contains many of the important similar and necessary elements required for a healthy, long-lasting marriage.

1. There must be a strong MUTUAL attraction between BOTH parties:

In marriage, the explanation is rather obvious, but very important. If the attraction isn’t absolutely mutual, the relationship isn’t going to fly.

In dentistry, mutual attraction is absolutely necessary between dentin and/or enamel, and restorative materials to ensure quality, long-lasting bond strengths.

2. Both parties must be flexible:

If one partner in a marriage is overly rigid, even though the other is quite flexible, the relationship will probably suffer and eventually break. Such will usually happen sooner than if both were flexible. This is much more important than how tough one or both of the parties may be. If both parties have the ability to be flexible in optimal/respectful ways, and they hold each other together with great glue (mutual attraction), there is a high probability of a long-term successful marriage.

If one dental material is overly rigid, it stresses the glue that holds the restoration together and can even destroy the glue itself. If the glue is weak, a failed restoration will result much sooner.

3. There must be adequate energy put in

A healthy, long-lasting marriage and restoration cannot survive unless adequate energy is put into the relationship. Helping one another with household and daily tasks helps to energize a marriage relationship, making the two individuals stronger as one.

If a restoration is not adequately light cured/energized, one loses the opportunity to maximize the strong mutual attraction or optimal flexibility possible for both materials. For example, for the adhesive to have a strong mutual attraction with the composite, the most important factor is that that the composite be polymerized completely. Inadequate energy sets a restoration up for failure!

4. Meddling third parties must be avoided

Even an apparently healthy marriage can be destroyed if either partner allows a weakening third entity to come between them and their spouse/partner. Tragically, otherwise sound and healthy marriages can be destroyed by a meddling in-law, family member, or friend. Many states even have laws facilitating legal charges to be brought against such entities under the statute of “alienation of affection.”

In case of tooth restoration, let’s call this “alienation of adhesion.” If the adhesive that binds the restoration is compromised via placement of weak substances such as a glass ionomer or even stronger “dentin substitute,” such substances won’t strongly adhere to the dentin and restoration to be bonded. This results in precluding the adhesive from being able to reach and integrate with the underlying dentin. Furthermore, the relatively weak and unnecessary material creates a much weaker foundation for supporting the stronger restoration.

TO BE CONTINUED…

2/26/2014 6:03:50 AMan expert on marriage, but over my 35 years in the dental industry and 40 wonderful years with my wife, I can’t help but have https://www.ultradent.com/blog/Lists/Posts/AllPosts.aspxFalse
